Readers' Workshop
Our current unit of study is focusing on Schema and Making Connections. We are learning that activating our schema or background knowledge before we read, while we read, and after we read will help us with our comprehension. We will also be learning that good readers make text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections.
Thr next unit of study will focus on using our sensory images as we read. We will learn that we are able to feel, taste, smell, see, and touch things as we are reading.

Math
In Unit 5 we will cover lace value, number stories, and basic facts. First graders will investigate place value for ones and tens. They will also explore addition of 2-digit numbers. First graders will also make up and solve number stories and be introduced to "What's My Rule?"
During Unit 6 we will focus on developing fact power. Your children will be introduced to fact finding strategies. Coin value, measuring, and time will be reviewed. They will also develop procedures for addition and subtraction.
In Unit 7 we will learn about geometry and attributes. Your children will sort attribut blocks according to attribute rules, they will identify 3-dimensional shapes, learn about poygons, and explore symmetrical shapes.

We have been working on adding details and stretching out small moments as we tell a story. We will also be working on writing procedures such as tying our shoes and making a snowman.

We will be learning about animals in winter. We will focus on animals that are here in New Hampshire. We are going to learn about the different habitats.
